December 21, 2011 : Announcements, Crafty Things, Published!

Meet the hedgehogs + a book feature and giveaway! YAY!

Last June (as in June of 2010) I was perusing the site of Crafty Planet and saw that there was a call for entries for their next book…they needed projects made out of one yard of fabric to feature of their upcoming book which was a sequel to One Yard Wonders (A book which I had lovingly made most of the projects in and was proudly displayed in my sewing room downstairs)! :) I knew that I just had to come up with something to try and see if my first ever pattern could be published in a book. So, later that night I sat down at my sewing machine and started cutting, sewing, cutting, sewing, ripping out and sewing some more. Out came the Bartholomew Bookends! :) WOO!

I quickly submitted the patterns and photos to Trish and Becca at Crafty Planet! And much to my surprise, they were going to be featured in the next book, coming out November of 2011! :) WAHOO! I did a happy dance around my kitchen and then proceeded to call my husband babbling with excitement (followed by a celebratory bowl of ice cream of course! :)

SO, now comes November of 2011 and look what appears at my doorstep; FABRIC BY FABRIC ONE YARD WONDERS! TAA DAAAAA! I have to say, that this book has some fabulous projects for the kids, your kitchen, yourself and your friends. It is CHALK FULL of idea for gifts and working at your sewing machine on a lazy December afternoon! :)

OH–and the best part, I am able to give away one copy of FABRIC BY FABRIC ONE YARD WONDERS (and you’ll also receive a few other goodies from my little collection of plush toys)! Isn’t that amazing!? And I just love to hear about handmade gifts that people give and since it’s the Christmas season, I would love to hear about anything handmade that you have received that just LOVED for Christmas! :) So, leave a comment below and tell me why you would just die to have the book or what your favorite handmade gift was! I’ll use random.org to select a winner on Monday December 26th (that should give you all enough time right?! :)

So, get on it, start dreaming about all the one-yard projects you can make and leave a comment below! :) Merry Christmas everyone! :)

  6. Katie Sloma says:

Congrats on your first published pattern!! Jake actually got me a sewing machine for Christmas and I just started my first project last night – making a teeny-tiny apron for my goddaughter for Christmas. I’m loving it so far, and would love this book!! And the fav handmade gift I’ve received would have to be this cozy fleece blanket Jake’s mom made for Christmas a few years back. It’s my go-to cuddler :) So happy things are going so great for you, my dear!

  7. athena p says:

Oh my. A) I am SO proud of you. This is amazing! eeeek!! B) I actually plan to resolve to make more *stuff* for my girls next year. I’ve got the clothing part down pat, but it’s time to stitch them toys. FUN things. My four year old would *love* that hedgehog. SOOOO cute. C)I never win, but thought I’d enter any way. I have the first copy of One Yard Wonders – a dear friend gifted it to me for my 30th birthday, and it’s one of my favorite craft books. I’d love to add this one (Especially since YOU are in it!!) to my collection!!

    way to go, friend.
    SO happy for you!!!!
    whoop!

  10. Jenna D. says:

That is so great! I love handmade gifts. A good friend from my sewing classes gave me a handmade jean quilt for my baby that will arrive in January, it is the sweetest gift that anyone could have given me.

  11. Nathalie says:

Holy Moly! Not only featured in the book, but ON THE COVER!!!! CONGRATS!!!

  12. Brittany R says:

Major congrats, Em! I love the first book and have used it many times when I needed a quick gift. :)
It’s so fun to see all the exciting things going on for you. I can say I knew you when! ;)

  13. Jess Albers says:

Congratulations on being published! They are cute little guys :) I have an aunt who would love all your projects! Can’t wait to tell her all about everything (and this book!) See you soon!

  14. Dena says:

Emily, you seriously never cease to amaze me! Your creativity has no end. I would love to receive a copy of the book because I need to learn to sew! I can only handle the basics, currently.

I’m trying to think of handmade gifts I’ve received but the only things that come to mind are the dolls and clothing my mom made me throughout the years. Me and Maren both got handmade bunny dolls for our 7th or 8th birthday from my mom and both named them Bonnie Bunny.

  15. Shayna says:

I should be selected because I saw your cute bookends featured on the morning news :) Woot! Also, because I am loving learning how to sew and make my own fun things for myself, others and little JuJu.

<3 love you and congratulations on Bartholomew(s) making the book!

  16. MindyS says:

Congrats! I love those cute little critters you make! How cool that your first pattern is featured in a fabulous book AND is on the cover! Way to go girl! I would LOVE to get my hands on that book and start diving into the world of sewing! It would be a heartfelt tribute to a close friend I had who LOVED to craft and especially sew! Woo hoo!

  17. Cindy says:

Congrats on getting your pattern chosen! Looks great!
Favorite handmade gift has to be when my older brother made me a little table lamp in his shop class. It’s still in my room.

  18. CJ says:

OMG such a cute hedgehog! I think my favorite homemade gift was when my friend made me a personalized bracelet before she moved.
I really love making things for people, though.

  19. Marie Anderson says:

Congrats EMILY!!! That is such an awesome accomplishment!!! AND your on the COVER! that is just so awesome! I have looked at those books and this year added them to my Christmas list :) I love hand-making things and i think that one yard wonders would be an awesome way to start using a sewing machine and not just hand sew everything (I made my whole family Christmas stockings last year for a total of 10 stockings!)

  20. Anne Marie says:

Love your hedgehogs – I am dreaming of this book as I love smaller projects. Actually I love small, quick projects and this seems like the perfect answer to my dream!

  21. Gill says:

    This looks a great book!
    I love the hedgehog bookends!

  22. SewLindaAnn says:

Okay, those hedgehog bookends are dynamite! I have the first book and I just HAVE to have the 2nd because I would not be complete without the whole set. I love fun books with lots of sweet ideas and I also need to learn more about working with fabrics other than quilter’s cotton. Best handmade gift received, as a Starbucks mug with the insert. My friend put our picture on it and some sweet sayings. Have a great Wednesday!

  23. Henria O. says:

Not only do the projects in the book look amazing but I believe this book would be exceptional for parents who want to introduce their children to the world of crafting! There are a few projects that I am just dying to do with my daughters!

  24. jessica says:

awesome awesome!!! these little guys are so so darling! how funny that i poured through the book the other day at crafty planet to find another friend’s pattern and i totally missed your cuties right under my nose on the COVER! super super cute emily!! congrats!!

  25. Kristen says:

I’m hoping to get a sewing machine for Christmas…that is why I would LOVE to win this book!

  26. Jamie says:

It was so fun seeing your creation go from an idea, to a project to being published and on the cover of OYW! You are the ULTIMATE of creative and those cute hedgehogs would look darling on any bookshelf.

  27. Katina says:

Love your little hedgehogs, too cute! I don’t receive many hand made gifts because I give so many and people are intimidated to give me anything they’ve made because they don’t think they’ll measure up, or so they’ve told me! But I do occasionally get something and the most favorite thing I’ve received that was hand made was a stained glass heart.

  28. Cindy A. says:

That is wonderful news! Congratulations! :)

My absolute favorite handmade Christmas gift was the year I received a hand me down sweater coat from my first cousin, Retia. It was special because our late grandmother had made it in the 1970′s when Retia was a teenager. She loved that sweater coat and wore it almost every day during her freshman year in high school. Receiving such a treasured gift meant more to me than any store bought item ever could. It is now 15 years later and I still cherish that coat with all my heart.

  29. Ali says:

Your bookends are so adorable! I just took my first sewing class a few weeks ago and can’t get enough! I’m pregnant with my second baby right now (a girl), and can’t wait to make her little outfits and cute things.

  30. Mama Lusco says:

I have the first OYW book and would love this one, too! Congrats on your pattern being published – they are really cute! I loved receiving a vintage apron my great-uncle had made for my grandmother. It was even hand-stitched :)

  31. Huey Ming says:

I don’t think it was a Christmas gift, but I absolutely love the drawstring lunchbox my mom made for me when I was still in primary school. I’d love to get my hands on this book so I can spread that kinda love to some of my favourite people :) Thank you for the chance!

  32. lee says:

What a wonderful accomplishment! congratulations to you! I love that I made two picnic quilts for my twin sisters! they are going to love them. Last year my sis in law made me a bracelet – I love it! nothing better than handmade! thanks!

  33. Becky Greene says:

I love the hedgehog bookends – just adorable. My favorite handmade christmas gift is a set of three angel ornaments that my sister made for me eons ago. I lovingly find a special spot for them every year. Thanks for the giveaway opportunity!

  34. jess says:

i’m soooooo excited for you!!!! my favorite handmade gift was the set of bowls my amazing friend Tay made for me several years ago. they are currently being utilized to feed ‘the girls’ because I can’t find cat food bowls quite as beautiful :) …. ps. i’m still so excited :)

  35. Becky says:

This book will help me with future handmade gifts! My favorite handmade gift was from my grandmother, who made all the girl cousins (and there were a lot of us!) small doll sized quilts. I still have mine!

  36. Katie says:

I think the majority of the handmade gifts I’ve gotten at Christmas are some form of bark (peppermint, peanut butter) and not at all sewing related. :(

Congrats on getting into the book!

  37. Michelle says:

I want to make every project in this book!

  38. michelle price says:

I checked this book out the other day! It is gorgeous-love how the sections are divided. I’d love to try some of the home-dec projects!

  41. Christie S. says:

I made a really cute set of placemats this year to give as a gift. I’m hoping to find time after the new year to make a set for myself. This book would be a great addition to my sewing room. I need ideas.

  42. Dana TM says:

For favorite handmade gifts, of course I have to go with my kids’ drawings etc, otherwise they would be very unhappy! :)

  43. Carrie says:

favorite handmade gift… that is hard, I love to receive handmade gifts so all of them are special. But I think the most treasured is the cookbooks my mom has made for me. All of our favorite family recipes that I now get to pass along to my children.

  44. Jen McKay says:

Congratulations Emily! How exciting to have one of your patterns published! I love this type of sewing book with lots of little projects, and I’d love winning a copy of this one because YOU ARE IN IT…and there are 101 new projects to try…How fun!

I have my mom’s old sewing machine and love making things with it. I think my most recent favorite handmade Christmas gifts was a hat that my sister knit for me. I love giving and getting handmade gifts. They are so special!

  45. Neyda says:

I had my baby boy on dec 1st. I am loving all my homemade blankets & quilts that we received as gifts. Thanks for this giveaway!!

  47. Carla G says:

My favorite was a knitted sweater that my grandma gave me many years ago. Congratulations for getting your project published. :)

  48. Liz says:

This book looks great! Congrats! I’ve been making Riley Blake elephant softies to give away lately. Probably the best homemade gift I’ve ever gotten has been burpcloths. Thanks!

  49. lorraine says:

my favorite handmade gift is anything handknit..i loved the cowl that a friend made for me this year..so pretty! :)

  50. Gill says:

This looks such a great book!
I love anything handmade but unfortunately I’m the only one in my family who makes! Although my sister did knit me a hat about 20 years ago!
